Why Have Other Midsize Trucks Moved to Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engines?
Turbocharged engines have become more common across the truck market for several reasons. Automakers are working to balance power, fuel economy, emissions requirements, packaging, and production efficiency. A smaller turbocharged engine can produce strong torque, especially at lower engine speeds, while helping manufacturers meet modern efficiency goals.
That is why many Frontier competitors now use turbocharged four-cylinder engines as their main powertrains. The Toyota Tacoma uses turbocharged 2.4-liter powertrains, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon use a 2.7-liter TurboMax engine, and the Ford Ranger uses EcoBoost turbocharged engine options.
These engines have their strengths. Turbocharged trucks can deliver impressive torque and strong towing numbers. However, not every driver wants the feel, added components, or long-term ownership considerations that come with forced induction. That is where the Frontier creates a meaningful point of difference.
